Take Route 121 northeast from Greenville and you come to Versailles, Ohio, a beautiful community first platted in 1819. Versailles has a council-administrator form of government with a full-time police department and a volunteer fire department. Electrical power is supplied by Versailles Municipal Power. Versailles is the home of many of Darke County's most successful and profitable business enterprises. The diverse local economy is comprised of firms working in manufacturing, meat and poultry, automobile sales and service, trucking, professional services, and retail sales. There are four Protestant churches and one Catholic Church located in Versailles. There are also two elementary schools, one junior high school, a high school and a library.
Major industries and businesses in and around Versailles are Midmark Corporation, manufacturer of hospital and medical hard-goods, Weaver Brothers Inc. a major egg processor, Whiteford Foods, a frozen meat processor to the fast food industries, VPP Printing, Acurite Inc., Expert Regrind, Edwin F. Nickol Monument Co., and Pepcon. Area transportation companies include Pohl Transportation, Dick Lavy Trucking, Shenandoah Trucking, and Classic Carriers.
Versailles celebrates its poultry and egg economy during its annual Poultry Days celebration in June. Ward, Indian Creek, and Heritage parks offer swimming, a new YMCA facility, picnic, and sports facilities for residents to enjoy. Just outside of Versailles is the new 18-hole Stillwater Valley Golf Club. Versailles offers a great business environment including an Enterprise Zone incentive program.
