Darke County Chamber of Commerce Celebrates Outstanding Achievements in Agriculture with 2024 Agri-Business Luncheon & Expo


[Darke County, Ohio, March 22, 2024] – The Darke County Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2024 Ag Awards, recognizing exemplary contributions and achievements in the agricultural sector. These awards celebrate the dedication, innovation, and commitment of individuals and organizations shaping the agricultural landscape in Darke County and beyond.


The winners of the 2024 Ag Awards are as follows:


1. **Agriculture Achievement Award**: Mr. Sam Custer has been a staple in the agricultural industry for decades. From his start as advisor of the Versailles FFA to Miami Valley CTC to Ohio State Extension. Sam is well respected throughout Ohio and his impact on the agriculture industry continues to grow as his passion for agriculture never ends.


2. **Agriculture Advocacy Award**: Darke County Farm Bureau is a grassroots membership organization that is committed to supporting our farm and food community. The Farm Bureau is focused on growing the next generation of farmers and producers in Ohio. Along with trusted organizations like The Ohio State University, FFA and 4-H, Farm Bureau helps to promote career pathways, ag literacy and provide economic opportunity, networking opportunities and leadership development for young farmers. From advocating for policies that safeguard our farmers' rights to providing invaluable resources and educational opportunities, the Farm Bureau stands as a steadfast ally for those who till the soil and tend to the land.



3. **Young Farmer Award**: Our Young Farmer Award Recipient is Aaron Overholser. Aaron is a forward-thinking farmer, not only focused on his current farming business, but also how he will leave the land for future generations. Aaron understands the value of family, hard work, and focus and puts all of those values into not just his farm, but also his community.

The Darke County Chamber of Commerce was honored to host Aaron Wilson with OSU Extension as keynote speaker for the Agri-Business Luncheon. With his unparalleled expertise and charismatic delivery, Aaron left a lasting impact on our audience, sharing invaluable insights and perspectives on Ag Weather and it’s impacts and trends from 2023 into 2024. His engaging presentation resonated deeply with attendees, igniting inspiration and fostering meaningful conversations long after the event concluded. The Chamber is truly appreciative for Aaron's contribution to making the event a resounding success.

Ag Achievement Award Criteria


To be eligible for nomination for the Agriculture Achievement Award, a farmer/family must meet the following requirements:


  1. Reside in Darke County;
  2. Be actively involved in agriculture and community;


Award will be based on their commitment to:

  • Innovation
  • Giving back to their communities,
  • Committing to good land stewardship
  • Being a great example for future generations.


Ag Advocacy Award Criteria


To be eligible for nomination for the Agricultural Advocacy Award, an individual or organization must meet the following requirements:


  1. Serve the Darke County community


Award will be based on their commitment to:

  • Promoting the agriculture industry on all levels, from local to the state level.
  • Educating the consumer and general public about the importance and value of the agriculture industry.
  • Promoting the principles of agriculture such as: biotechnology, soil stewardship, resource management, economic and environmental benefits as well as the humane principles of sound livestock production and management.
  • Preparing students for careers in agriculture


Young Farmer


To be eligible for nomination for the Young Farmer Award, a farmer (male or female) must meet the following requirements:

  1. Reside in Darke County;
  2. Be a farm operator deriving a minimum of two-thirds of his/her income from farming; and
  3. Be aged 21-39


Award will be based on:

  • The progress in their agricultural career;
  • General farming and conservation practices; and
  • Contribution to his/her community, state, nation.


Candidates who have a financial interest in the farm operation (a sole proprietor, partner, or a corporation) will receive higher ranking in the judging process. However, nominees also may include salaried farm managers and employees who are actively involved in policy and management decisions.
